Digital cameras have changed the dynamics of photography in many ways, but many of the basics are the same. This workshop will focus on how to SEE the way an artist sees. To work with natural lighting indoors and out, and to think of composing your photograph in the camera as much as possible.

One of the things that makes digital cameras so valuable is that you can concentrate on the ART of photography and let the new technology of the camera do most of the work for you. I took my first photography course in 1980 while doing my graduate work. In those days I learned the technical language and skills needed to use a single lens reflex camera and get the settings 'just so' for my photograph. When I got my first digital camera I was amazed at how easy it was to use what the camera offered to skip much of that mental process and get straight to shooting photographs as an artist and not a technician.

This class will focus on how to SEE what is out there and capture what you see with your digital camera. I will focus on how you can use the automatic settings of your camera to get the most out of them freeing you to most of the time to concentrate on creating great images without a lot of time spent on digital editing.

Much of our time will be spent in the process of taking photographs. You learn from taking lots of pictures and I will encourage you to do just that with plenty of time set aside for practice, structured assignments, and time for evaluation and discussion on what works and what doesn’t.

You will discover some easy ways to transfer your digital images to your computer, editing without hassle and how to manage the files. If you want to spend some time learning how to use your particular camera there will be a short pre-workshop for digital camera basics to get you ready to actually shoot photographs over the weekend.
